Dads
and Doulas

The
relationship between a doula and dads (partners) can be very important.
They work together as a team. My intent as a doula is not to diminish
the dads' role, but to enhance it—to free him or her up
to stand by the mother—to give recognition and validation
to both.
A mother needs to feel her partner’s care, love, sense of
communication, responsibility and sense of sharing in the ultimate
experience of bringing her child into the world. The partner also
may have fears, “Will everything be all right?” "Is
this normal?” A doulas ability to encourage and verbalize
what is happening is deeply reassuring. She can prepare your partner
for what is coming, give suggestions, and provide encouragement.
She is a model for supportive behavior and attitudes. An ongoing
study of partners has suggested that their behavior is altered
when they are not the only person responsible for the support
of the mother. The presence of a doula compliments a partner's
role, and strengthens it.
